This comprehensive course combines Category 1: Locate Utility Services (HSG47) and Category 2: Implement Safe (Digging) Excavating Practices, providing participants with the essential skills and knowledge to safely detect underground utility services and execute safe excavation practices. The training aligns with industry standards and incorporates relevant Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance documents, including HSG47 Avoiding Danger from Underground Services and HSG150 Health and Safety in Construction.

Course Content

Participants will cover the following key topics:

1. Category 1: Locate Utility Services (HSG47)

  • Interpreting utility plan drawings and identifying symbols and coded information.
  • Preparing and using location equipment to detect a range of underground services using recognised and approved detection methods.
  • Identifying the dangers and hazards associated with underground services.
  • Recognising why some services are more difficult to locate.
  • Carrying out site marking using appropriate methods.

2. Category 2: Implement Safe (Digging) Excavating Practices

  • Ensuring all necessary location, marking, and site safety provisions have been carried out correctly prior to any excavation work commencing.
  • Identifying the dangers and hazards associated with excavations.
  • Selecting and using safe digging techniques to carry out and maintain excavations using both hand tools and hand-held power tools.

Prerequisites

No formal qualifications are required. However, participants must bring suitable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for the practical components of the course.

Certification

Upon successful completion, participants receive an EUSR Certificate valid for 3 years.

Funding Available

Unemployed

If you are unemployed and seeking work, you may be eligible for funding from the Department of Social Protection to cover all, or some of the costs of your training. (means depending, you may be entitled to up to €1000).

Candidates who wish to avail of this must make an appointment with a case officer in their local Intreo office, discuss their case & apply for funding. The candidate will receive a funding application form which they must sign & bring/post to us. Upon completion, we will send this back to the case officer who will then review the funding application.

Upon receiving funding approval in the post from the Department of Social Protection, candidates must then call us to reserve a place on our course. We cannot confirm a place on our course until funding approval is gained.
