Description

Prevention and Management of Aggression and Violence (PMAV) Awareness is aimed at early intervention and non- physical methods for preventing or managing disruptive and aggressive behaviour in the classroom.

The aim of this course is to provide participants (Teachers/Instructors and other Educational Sector Employees) with the knowledge, confidence and skill to recognise the early indicators that precede aggressive behaviour in the classroom and the ability to assess and de- escalate a situation before it becomes violent. The course will also cover the principles of personal safety techniques to avoid injury if an incident becomes physical.

  • Ethical & Legal requirements associated with aggression and violence
  • Understanding communicative intent
  • Strategies to avoid occurrences of aggression and violence
  • Recognition, assessment and management of escalating situations
  • Assault cycle
  • Student and situation specific risk assessment and management
  • Pre-emptive de-escalation – including verbal and non-verbal techniques
  • Incident management reporting - recording and review
  • Management of verbal aggression
  • Crisis management
  • Personal safety in providing physical care.
  • Physical, psychological, and legal implications associated with Restraint – including physical, seclusion etc.

Demonstration & practicals:

➢ Defence from: Kicks, slaps & punches
➢ Breakaway from holds on: clothing, wrists, arms, neck/shoulders from behind, hair, body or bite.
