Under the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 workers may select and appoint from among their fellow employees, a Safety Representative. The Safety Representative role includes the undertaking of tasks such as workplace inspections, accidents investigation, investigation of complaints and consultation on workplace health and safety matters.
Training is required for safety representatives and employers are required to ensure that such training is comprehensive and allows Safety Representatives to fulfil their role in the workplace.
This QQI programme is designed to provide the learner with the skills and knowledge to fulfil their role as a safety representative; to promote and maintain safety and health in the context of the learner's workplace and to effectively represent employees on health and safety issues.
Objectives
This course is targeted at employees who have been appointed or elected as a company safety representative, or is intending to become a safety representative.

Skills Demonstration: 20%
In skills demonstrations, candidates will be assessed in communication skills (dialogue, discussion and moving to a decision/ conclusion) an observation check sheet will be used to identify the expected skills and activities.
Examination: 30%
This is a theory based examination of 90 minutes duration that assesses the candidate's ability to recall and apply theory and understanding of components from all the units. Candidates will be required to complete in writing or orally. 10 short answer questions and 2 structured questions.
Assignments X 2: 50%
Candidates will be required to complete 2 projects that demonstrate their ability to carry out a safety, health and welfare inspection and to carry out a risk assessment (including identifying hazards, risks and control measures) within their work environment.
Unemployed
If you are unemployed and seeking work, you may be eligible for funding from the Department of Social Protection to cover all, or some of the costs of your training. (means depending, you may be entitled to up to €1000).
Candidates who wish to avail of this must make an appointment with a case officer in their local Intreo office, discuss their case & apply for funding. The candidate will receive a funding application form which they must sign & bring/post to us. Upon completion, we will send this back to the case officer who will then review the funding application.
Upon receiving funding approval in the post from the Department of Social Protection, candidates must then call us to reserve a place on our course. We cannot confirm a place on our course until funding approval is gained.
Employed
